15. Valerie June

15. Valerie June - Pushin' Against A Stone

This is none other than Valerie June Hockett. She has been one of the wonderful surprises of the year. Her music is a blend of gospel, jazz, blues, gospel and Appalachian folk. She calls it "organic moonshine roots music." Born in Jackson, Tennessee, she moved to Memphis when she was 19. Recently she moved to Brooklyn and got hooked up with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, who co-wrote some songs on this album as well as produced it. This is a very addictive album, so be warned. She is playing the Granada in Dallas with Sharon Jones in February.
